I’ve named our blog “The Daily Planet” (yes, I read a lot of Superman comics when I was a kid), yet I also wanted to recognize the rich history of Chatham’s print and newspaper industry (The Chatham Daily Planet Newspaper and Daily Planet Building).
The Daily Planet building housed the original Chatham Planet Printing and Publishing Company.
The Chatham Planet newspaper was published weekly from 1857 to 1891, after which it became the Chatham Daily Planet until December 29th, 1922.
As per local legend, people use to associate this building to “The Daily Planet building” in Superman series.
Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the Man of Steel made his debut in 1938
Jerry grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Joe spent most of his childhood in Toronto, Ontario. The two met when Joe and his family moved to Ohio. The rest is history.
The original name choice for Superman’s favourite newspaper was believed to stem from Shuster’s childhood Canada-based newspaper, the Toronto Daily Star (now known as the Toronto Star), where he worked as a newsboy growing up.
The decision for the name change to the Daily Planet came years later from possible copyright issues with real-world newspapers. So rumour has it that Joe Shuster remembered seeing the The Daily Planet Building while passing through Chatham on his way to Ohio.
I doubt we will be posting everyday, however it is our intention to use this forum to share our wise thoughts, post our rants and contribute what we hope you will consider helpful opinion, discussion and encouragement. Come by often and please leave your thoughts and suggestions.
